Biologics in Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopaedic surgery has a rich history of introducing new procedures and new technology in the profession for clinical practice. Orthopaedic surgeons have become much more innovative and successful in treating a variety of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries with improved implants and biologics. Biologics are orthopaedic products that in some cases can help regenerate or repair damaged tissue, offering an alternative to replacement. For patients biologics potentially allow for less invasive procedures, faster healing, and shorter hospital stays.

Some examples of biologics in orthopaedics currently consist of bone grafts to help remodel areas around fractured bone, tissue engineering such as collagen scaffolds, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) used to initiate a healing response within damaged tissue.

Biologics in Orthopaedic Surgery - Orthopaedic Associates of Aspen and Glenwood

Orthopaedic Associates of Aspen and Glenwood with the Aspen Sports Medicine Foundation have initiated multiple research projects in conjunction with Colorado State University and The University of Colorado investigating the uses of PRP and its ability to initiate a healing response within different injuries. Orthopaedic Associates and the Aspen Sports Medicine Foundation have accepted the invitation to present our findings at a podium presentation in February of 2009 at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Las Vegas, NV.

It is important to not only remain ahead of the curve to provide the best possible care for our patients, but to also have a deep understanding of research cascading into the medical arena. Orthopaedic Associates and the Aspen Sports Medicine Foundation are leading the field in patient care and commitment to advancing research.
